FMT - ‘No funds for NGOs in DAP constituencies’

KUCHING: Non-governmental organisations in Sarawak DAP-held constituencies seem to have hit a brick wall over their requests for government allocations.

Citing the Batu Kawah Sports Organisation, state DAP secretary-general Chong Chieng Jen said the organisation claimed it had not received its regular government allocations.

Chong said the allocations had nothing to do with the outcome of the April 16 state election in which DAP trounced Barisan Nasional ally Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) in 13 of the 19 seats contested.

He said the allocation of funds included in Budget 2011 was approved last year when assemblyman Tan Joo Phoi was an assistant minister.

Tan lost his Batu Kawah seat to DAP Christina Chew in the April 16 polls.
“And now the Batu Kawah Sports Association does not have the allocation just because he (Tan) lost?

“Why was the allocation not approved in the budget that was tabled last year? That is the question I want to ask,” he said.

Chong accused SUPP of using non-governmental organisations to carry out an insidious attack against DAP.

He said SUPP was now “using NGOs to run down DAP”.

“SUPP is using NGOs to put the blame on DAP’s electoral victories for the non-allocation of funds to the NGOs.

“I know for a fact that a few of the office-bearers in this (Batu Kawah Sports Association) are SUPP’s active members and even branch leaders.

“I ask them not to use their positions as office-bearers in NGOs to carry out the propaganda of SUPP and Barisan Nasional.

“They should ask Tan who was an assistant minister last year when the budget for this year was approved.

“They should not put the blame on Chew,” Chong said.
