FMT - University students to take to the streets

KUALA LUMPUR: Angry university students will take to public demonstrations over the suspension of International Islamic University (UIA) professor Abdul Aziz Bari.
Malaysian University Student Solidarity Movement (SMM) chairman Ahmad Syukri Abdul Razab said that they were looking at a November date for the gathering.

“This is to give a symbolism to all parties, including the public, that academic freedom has to be respected by everyone,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.

He was accompanied by representatives from university student groups such as Persatuan Mahasiswa Islam Universiti Malaya, Majlis Perwakilan Mahasiswa Nasional and Persatuan Pelajar Kebangsaan Islam Malaysia.

Ahmad Syukri said that the students had earlier handed over a memorandum to a representative from the Higher Education Ministry at the Parliament building today.
