But the 2008 political tsunami changed all that. The state lost an unprecedented five states and one parliamentary seat to opposition DAP, setting off alarm bells within BN.
But the tremors of shock have since settled with the state BN components – Umno, MIC and MCA – taking a realistic approach to their chances.
BN’s strength lies in its rural pockets and in state Umno chief Mohd Ali Rustam’s “down-to-earth personality”.
According to a prominent MIC leader here, Malays are still loyal to the state Umno and Ali Rustam irrespective of “whatever is happening in Kuala Lumpur”.
“The chief minister (Ali Rustam) has made it this way. Malays are loyal to Umno Malacca and everyone here likes Ali Rustam,” he said.
“The chief minister is very down to earth… he is known as Mr Likeable here. He’s a key asset moving towards the general election.
“He’s a grassroots man and has served the people for the last 25 years. He started right at the bottom and knows the heart beat of Malacca voters.”
