FMT - ‘Kedai 1Msia products not as cheap’

KUALA LUMPUR: Goods sold at the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) are not as cheap as it is made out to be and the savings from the purchases are not as promised, said the opposition.

They said the government is misleading the people especiallly when it had allocated RM40 million to guarantee lowest prices and greater savings for the 250 products sold at outlets.

“BN ministers have been going round telling the rakyat how ridiculously cheap the products sold at KR1M. It is irresponsible and misleading,” said Petaling Jaya Utara MP, Tony Pua today.

Pua conducted his own research and compared prices of 23 goods at KR1M and Carrefour, and found 10 items to be more expensive, and the savings made from the rest were marginal.

Disposable diapers, chilli sauce, Ceylon tea and dishwashing liquid cost more at KR1M and the 23 goods totalled RM130.49. It did not make up the 32% savings as promised, claimed Pua.

Pua also said that the same 23 items purchased at Carrefour not only cost less (RM120.53) but also recorded a savings of 8% more than at KR1M.

“Even where 1Malaysia products are indeed cheaper, they are nowhere near the claimed “savings”. For example, a 400gm packet of frozen minced beef cost cost RM4.89 at KR1M.

“In Carrefour, the Ramly branded packet cost RM5.29 or only 8% more, instead of the promoted 18% in savings. Be truthful, don’t make exaggerated claims,” said Pua.
