FMT - MCA: Retaining PPSMI a ‘win-win’ situation

PETALING JAYA: MCA hailed the cabinet’s decision to allow students the option of learning Science and Mathematics in English as a “win-win” situation which “puts an end to all confusion”.

In a statement today, its party president, Chua Soi Lek said: ” The government has listened to the voices of the rakyat in coming up with a win-win situation for all stakeholders concerned”.

Despite being, a Barisan Nasional component party, MCA has been one of those in support for the PPSMI (Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science in English) to be continued.

Yesterday, Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the the cabinet has decided to allow students under the PPSMI policy to continue learning Mathematics and Science in English or in Bahasa Malaysia.

Muhyiddin who is also the Deputy Prime Mnister said that this was this is to address the concerns of parents whose children are already studying the subjects in English.

However, he said that the abolition of PPSMI as decided in 2009 still stands and students coming into Standard One next year will learn the two subjects in Malay as the MBMMBI (Upholding the Malay Language, Strengthening the English Language) commences.

Chua today also repeated his call for English language to be made a compulsory pass subject in the SPM examination.
