FMT - Never too late to reintroduce PPSMI, says Tun M

KUALA LUMPUR: It is never too late if the government wants to reintroduce the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) in primary schools, although it has decided to fully use Bahasa Malaysia in 2016, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Labelling science subject as dynamic and moving all the time, the former prime minister stressed that it was better to teach the subject in the English language.

“You cannot keep up on science unless you understand the language in which the knowledge is coming to us. Every day there are new findings, discoveries, new theories. All these are not recorded in our language but in English.

“It is never too late. These are men-made laws, not God’s laws. More laws have been repealed, there is no such thing as fixed laws that cannot be changed forever,” he told reporters after delivering a special keynote address at the closing ceremony of the 3rd World Chinese Economic Forum at Seri Kembangan, here, yesterday.

Calling himself as much a nationalist as anybody else, Dr Mahathir who introduced PPSMI in 2003, said: “We need to master scientific knowledge if we want to develop the country.”

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced today the Cabinet decided to fully implement the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in primary schools in Bahasa Malaysia in 2016, and in the secondary schools in 2021.
