TMI - Ask Umno about hudud, Guan Eng tells Dr Chua

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today sought to deflect MCA’s latest barrage in the hudud controversy by highlighting to the Barisan Nasional (BN) party that lynchpin Umno seemingly favoured the Islamic penal law.

“I’ve already said in the (state) assembly there is not going to be hudud in Penang, and then Umno is now attacking PAS, (asking) why no hudud, as if Umno wants hudud,” Lim said in a voice recording made available to reporters today.

He was responding to media reports in which MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek targeted Pakatan Rakyat (PR) over the proposed introduction of hudud, during an event at the Kuan Im Temple in Georgetown.

The DAP secretary-general later asked Dr Chua to extend the same questions to Umno, which has stated it agrees with hudud law but said the time was not right for its implementation.

Among others, hudud prescribes stoning, whipping and amputation as punishment for criminal offences.
