TMI - Istana Negara at Jalan Istana closes its doors after 54 years

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 — The curtain fell today on Istana Negara at Jalan Istana, which has served as the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for 54 years, Bernama Online reported this evening.

In a ceremony that began early this morning, flag bearers comprising 10 members of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) lowered the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s standard as the last post was played to signify the shifting of Istana Negara at Jalan Istana to its new home in Jalan Duta.

The news portal reported that among those present to witness the occasion were Senior Deputy Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Department and chairman of National Official Ceremony, Datuk Othman Mahmood; Armed Forces (ATM) Chief of Staff Lt Gen Datuk Raja Afandi Raja Mohd Nor; and ATM’s Deputy Chief of Staff Maj Gen Datuk Abdul Aziz Ibrahim.

The procession of flag bearers then congregated at the main entrance of the palace to present the flag to Istana Negara Grand Chamberlain Datuk Tengku Farok Husin Tengku Abdul Jalil who represented Istana Negara in signifying the palace’s completion of duties.

In a symbolic gesture, the Grand Chamberlain later directed an Istana Negara officer to lock the main entrance of the palace signifying all duties at Istana Negara had completed before proceeding onto Istana Negara at Jalan Duta for the flag raising ceremony to signify the commencement of duties of the Malaysian Armed Forces at the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s new official residence.

The transfer of operations from Jalan Istana to Jalan Duta has been conducted in stages since October 19.

The 11.34-hectare Jalan Istana site originally belonged to local Chinese millionaire, Chan Wing, and served as his home.

It was bought after World War II by the Selangor state government as the residence for Selangor Sultan, Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah.
