KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 — Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today accused Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat of causing a rift in PAS, claiming many party leaders are uncomfortable allying with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP.
Utusan said that PAS’ Islamic struggle continues to be compromised as long as Nik Aziz (picture) remains as spiritual leader, and that the 80 year-old Kelantan Mentri Besar had become a liability to the party due to his loyalty to Anwar and DAP.
In a hard-hitting editorial today, Utusan columnist Datuk Zaini Hassan also charged that there were a number of leaders within PAS, including president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who desires Malay unity talks with Umno
“In Hadi Awang’s heart, as PAS president, he is not too interested with Nik Aziz’s ways. Even though Hadi is known as a stern person during debates but he is in actuality rational and soft.
“He is not comfortable working with DAP and also Anwar Ibrahim. What has been happening is only a show put on for pretence,” said the utusan columnist.
“In essence PAS is now divided into two...Nik Aziz’s struggle is now unclear,” he added.
The article also claimed that some PAS leaders, including deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din and former deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa would soon join sacked PAS leader Datuk Dr Hasan Ali in joining a “third force” which will push for Malay-Muslim unity.
“As long as he (Dr Haron Din) is in PAS, he will try to change the approach adopted by Nik Aziz.
“After Barisan Nasional, the opposition as a force, this third force will move together with Malay-Muslim NGOs on a mission of unity of the ummah. They believe that without this unity, DAP will control this country.”
