The newspaper printed the correction in its Letters page on Thursday, confirming Najib’s statement that his daughter had not been in Australia during the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting in Perth which he attended.
In a column labelled “Corrections & Clarifications”, the paper wrote: “In a report in The West Australian on Monday about shopping and sightseeing by CHOGM delegates, it was claimed that a daughter of Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak (picture) had spent $60,000 in David Jones. The West Australian acknowledges that this was not the case and that Mr Najib’s daughter was not in Perth at the time”.
It added that it was the newspaper’s policy to correct “significant errors” as quickly as possible.
The retraction, however, did not contain an apology to the prime minister for the mistake.
