The DAP national publicity secretary pointed out that both Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders like Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah and MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong had backed the Court of Appeal’s recent decision declaring as unconstitutional the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) which bars students from participating in politics.
Pua (picture), the Petaling Jaya MP, said in light of Najib’s announcements to repeal draconian laws on the eve of Malaysia Day, Malaysians had expected the Cabinet to remove the restrictions in academia.
“However, the BN government has instead chosen (to) burst the high hopes of the people and to abdicate its responsibility to the Attorney-General, purportedly to make a study of the ‘points of law’.
“The excuse could not be more lame as regardless of the court decision, the Cabinet could have taken opportunity to announce a proposed amendment of the UUCA, particularly the controversial section 15,” he said.
